For hair as big as a Texas beauty queen’s, you need to make sure you’ve got the right products and that you’ve mastered the art of backcombing.

Our friends at Pro Blo have shared some of their top tips for how to backcomb and give your hair some extra oomph.

Prep your hair for backcombing

If you’re going to wash your hair, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Try Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Elevating Shampoo and Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Nourishing Conditioner. While hair is still wet, work through some product to boost volume. Use Tigi Bed Head Queen For A Day or Tigi Catwalk Bodifying Spray.

If you have dry or day-old hair, some dry shampoo will help add texture and volume. Try one of deliciously scented CoLab dry shampoos or Tigi Bed Head Oh Bee Hive. Alternatively, use a styling aid like Tigi Catwalk Session Series Salt Spray.

How to backcomb hair

How to backcomb hair: Hold a section of hair straight upwards, and brush downwards with firm strokesOnce you’ve prepped your hair, make sure you’re using the right tools.

Pro Blo VolumizeME is a specially designed backcombing brush, and it’s perfect for two reasons. First, the narrow, shaped handle makes it easy to section hair. Second, the double-width comb head makes for more volume and less damage.

Divide hair into sections where you want extra volume.

Hold the section straight up from your head.

Using your brush, apply firm strokes down the section of the hair towards the scalp. Keep going until you’ve got the volume you want.

Repeat on the remaining sections.

Once you’ve backcombed all the sections, lightly smooth over the hair with your brush.

Finally, spritz your  new ‘do with some hair spray, and head on out to show it off.
