Sex And The City actress Cynthia Nixon was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine mammogram, in 2006.
At the time, she was starring in a theatrical production of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, and initially hid the diagnosis.
“I didn’t really want to make it public while I was going through it. I didn’t want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing”, she said.
For Cynthia, the potential impact on her partner and children was a paramount concern.
“My girlfriend [Christine Marinoni] was very scared. … She was the one doing the eating. She was in a panic. She was just trying to calm herself down any way she could”.
They made a point of speaking to Cynthia’s children about it.
“Basically, I told them, ‘You know, they found some breast cancer in my right breast. It’s very small. It’s very early. I’m going to have an operation. They’re going to take it out, and then we’re going to have six-and-a-half weeks of radiation every weekday, and this is like what Grandma went through and I’m going to be fine.”
Since her diagnosis and recovery, she’s become an ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an American organisation that raises money for cancer research and support.
Professionally, she’s been keeping busy too. You may have caught her on TV in ‘The Big C’ or ‘Hannibal’, and she’s currently filming ‘A Quiet Passion’, where she plays the lead role of 19th Century American poet, Emily Dickinson.
