New Year’s Resolutions like giving up chocolate and wine – we’re over them. We think if you’re going to make a resolution, it should be an enjoyable one. So why not make some beauty resolutions this year instead?
We’ve rounded up a selection of 16 beauty resolutions (16 because it’s 2016). Why not pick one or two that appeal to you and give them a go? We promise we’ve made them all as easy and enjoyable as possible!
Oh, and don’t worry if you feel you’ve left it too late for a beauty resolution. You don’t need a New Year for a fresh start – any day is a great time for a new beginning!
1 Smile more!
Our number one beauty resolution for 2016 is simply to smile more. Smiling is good for you – fact! Even if you have to force yourself, smiling genuinely decreases stress. If you need a little help to feel confident in your smile, iWhite have some very effective and affordable products.
2 Remove your makeup every night
Yes, we know – it’s late, you’re tired, maybe you’re not completely sober… but there are so many fab products out there now that make removing your makeup fast and easy. Sleeping in your makeup can contribute towards a host of skin problems, including breakouts, dryness, irritation, and uneven skin tone. So keep some cleansing pads or wipes on hand for those “can’t be bothered” nights. Your skin will thank you.
3 Stop biting your nails
Nail biting can be a hard habit to break, especially if you’re feeling bored, stressed or anxious.
One of our top tips is to consciously take time out to care for your hands and nails. If you catch yourself biting your nails, take a minute to apply some hand cream instead. Treat yourself to regular home manicures and paint those nails a bright colour to remind you to break the habit. We love the beautiful shades in the Olivia Palermo x Ciaté London Nail Collection.
4 Clean your makeup brushes regularly
Those innocent-looking makeup brushes can harbour nasties in the shape of germs and bacteria. Looking after your brushes properly will prolong their life and protect your investment. We recommend washing brushes once a week (more often if you do have breakouts). We’ve got a range of makeup brush cleaning tools so you can get everything washed up in a jiffy.
5 Wear sunscreen everyday
UV rays are the number one cause of premature ageing. Even when it isn’t sunny out, your skin is still exposed to their harmful effects, so always use the protection of an SPF. If you’re going to be outside a lot or it’s very sunny we’d recommend a sunscreen, but for incidental exposure try a moisturiser with SPF like Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturiser with SPF 50+.
6 Get more sleep!
Sounds like it should be easy, doesn’t it? Alas, even for those of us who are sound sleepers, the temptations of phones, internet and social media can keep us from turning in when we should. If you find it difficult to switch off, a regular night time routine can help. Why not make Anatomicals Cruisin’ for a Snoozin’ part of that routine? The deeply calming and relaxing aromatherapy balm will help ease you into a peaceful night’s sleep.
7 Try something new
Is there a makeup shade or product you’ve never tried, because you think it won’t work on you? Now’s the perfect time to break out of any style rut. Make 2016 the year you find your perfect red lipstick or finally master that cat-eye liner. When it comes to makeup, never be afraid to experiment – it washes off after all. (Although we do recommend a practise run first before taking any new looks out on the town!)
8 Take some me-time
Life’s pretty hectic these days, so it’s important to take some time out to relax and recharge. For us, nothing beats a nice long soak in the tub! We’re big fans of the Zoella Beauty range – gorgeous bath time treats at a very affordable price. To help you out with this resolution, were giving away a selection of Zoella Beauty goodies – enter here. The giveaway runs until 18th January.
9 Stop biting your lips
Don’t take it all out on your lips. Treat them with some balm instead. Lottie London Balm Balls are available in 3 delicious flavours – Cherry Pie, Caramel Apple and Strawberry Shortcake. (If only they were edible…)
10 Schedule an at-home facial
Take the time to really deep cleanse, exfoliate, face mask and moisturise your skin once a week. Use your favourite products or grab a Brightening Facial in a Box from Sanctuary. It has everything you need for a home spa treat, and all the products are designed to work together perfectly.
11 Exfoliate (gently!)
Regular exfoliation is key for great-looking, healthy skin. If your skin is sensitive or prone to irritation at this time of year, you might be inclined to skip this step. Choose the right product though, and you’ll be able to keep skin in tip-top condition without aggravating it. We love Glycolic Acid which is great for all skin types. Try Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads which gently but effectively restore your skin’s natural radiance.
Drinking plenty of water (sorry, wine doesn’t count!) is vital for your wellbeing. If you’re dehydrated, one of the first places it shows is your skin. So make a special effort to drink those 8 glasses of water a day. If you don’t like water, perk it up with some slices of lemon or lime. Herbal tea or diluted fruit juices are good too. If your skin is dehydrated, we love the new moisturiser from Pestle & Mortar – called Hydrate. It’s anti-ageing, lightweight and non-greasy – the perfect partner for cult favourite, Pure Hyaluronic Serum.
13 Look after your hands
Did you know that your hands can be the biggest giveaway when it comes to ageing? While we lavish care and expense on our faces, our poor old hands are often forgotten, in spite of all the hard work they do! Show your hands some TLC with Hand Therapy from Crabtree and Evelyn.
14 Don’t overpluck your brows
Remember the brow drought of the 90s? Not a good look, with hindsight! Take it easy when it comes to plucking your eyebrows and shape and groom brows instead. The Beautiful Brows Eyebrow Kit in a range of shades has everything you need to transform your brows into face-framing wonders. #Onfleek!
15 Care for your hair with a treatment
Your hair puts up with a lot – blow-drying, styling, colouring and more. Use an intensive treatment hair mask to restore your crowning glory to prime condition. Try the TIGI Bed Head Colour Goddess Miracle Treatment Mask. This miracle mask promises to enhance vibrancy and add depth to the hair
16 Clear out your makeup bag
Don’t let your makeup bag be a hazard! It’s time to take a critical look at everything you’ve got stuffed in there. Be ruthless and remove anything that’s past its date. Mascara is good for about 3-6 months, while most other makeup lasts 1-2 years. Chuck out anything that’s broken or any shades that just don’t suit. Once that’s done, you have the perfect excuse to go shopping – you could always treat yourself to a brand new makeup bag!
