Mineral Sunscreen vs Chemical Sunscreen: Which Is Right for You?

Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. It helps protect your skin from sun damage, premature ageing and pigmentation, and yes, it belongs in your routine even when you're not heading to the beach.

When you're shopping for SPF, you've probably noticed there are two main types: mineral sunscreen and chemical sunscreen.

So, what's the difference? And is one better than the other?

The good news is, you can't really go wrong. Both can provide excellent protection when used correctly. The trick is finding the one that suits your skin, your routine and, most importantly, one you'll actually want to wear every day.

What Is Mineral Sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreen uses UV filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect your skin from UV radiation. It’s often a great choice for sensitive or reactive skin, including skin prone to redness, rosacea or eczema.

Mineral formulas can also be a good option after treatments such as chemical peels, when your skin barrier needs a little extra care.

What Is Chemical Sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreen uses chemical UV filters to protect your skin from UV radiation. It’s often lightweight, invisible and comfortable to wear, making it a popular choice for everyday use and under makeup.

While some sensitive skin types may find certain chemical filters irritating, modern formulas are designed with comfort in mind.

Why Do Some People Choose Mineral SPF?

Some people specifically choose mineral sunscreen because they prefer to avoid chemical UV filters. This can be particularly important if you have sensitive or reactive skin, or if you're choosing SPF for the whole family.

But Is Chemical Sunscreen Safe?

Yes. Sunscreens sold in the EU must meet strict safety and regulatory requirements. Whether you choose mineral or chemical SPF ultimately comes down to your skin, the formula you enjoy wearing and personal preference.

Which Type of SPF Is Better?

There's no universal winner here. Think about what works best for you.

  • You may prefer mineral sunscreen if: you have sensitive or reactive skin, prefer mineral filters, or you're looking for a mineral formula for the family.

  • You may prefer chemical sunscreen if: you want something lightweight, invisible, easy to wear under makeup or don't like richer SPF textures.

Ultimately the best SPF is the one that suits your skin and that you'll actually enjoy wearing every day.

SPF Isn't the Whole Story...

The big SPF number gets all the attention, but UVA protection matters too.

While UVB is the main cause of sunburn, UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and is strongly associated with premature ageing, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. So, if you're investing in your skincare routine, good UVA protection is really important too.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for good UVA + UVB protection. In Europe, you'll often see UVA inside a circle on the packaging, a handy sign that the product provides UVA protection.

Don't Forget to Reapply Your SPF

Applying SPF once in the morning is a great start, but it shouldn't be the finish line.

Sunscreen becomes less effective throughout the day, particularly if you're swimming, sweating or towelling off. If you're spending time outdoors, reapply regularly and always after swimming or excessive perspiration.

And yes, that includes the SPF you carefully applied under your makeup at 8am!

A convenient SPF stick, such as the Ultrasun UV Face & Scalp Sunscreen Mist SPF 50 allows for daytime top-ups without having to redo your entire makeup, its aerosol spray makes it really easy to apply anywhere, anytime.

Donna's SPF Tip

“My biggest SPF advice? Find one you actually love wearing. Mineral or chemical matters much less than wearing it consistently and making sure you’re getting good UVA protection too, particularly if pigmentation or premature ageing is a concern.”

Your Expensive Serums Deserve Better…

Let's be honest, we're all happy to invest in a good cleanser, that Vitamin C serum everyone's talking about and the moisturiser that promises glass skin.

So why skip the one product that helps protect all of those results?

Without daily SPF, UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation, fine lines and collagen breakdown, undoing much of the hard work your skincare routine is doing.

Sunscreen isn't just protecting your skin, it's protecting your skincare investment.

So, are you Team Mineral or Team Chemical?

Whichever side you're on, just promise us one thing: don't skip the SPF.
