The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane is a medium-strength treatment that delivers excellent anti-aging benefits. Retinol stimulates skin cell renewal so that skin acts and looks younger. It helps to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and photo damage.

Why you need it

The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane is water-free solution containing 0.5% pure Retinol, an ingredient that has been proven to have significant anti-ageing benefits. Retinol (also known as Vitamin A) can reduce the appearances of fine lines, photo damage and of general skin ageing. Retinol works by communicating with skin cells, increasing skin cell turnover and collagen production. It also has powerful anti-oxidant properties helping to counteract environmental damage.
The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane is an ideal follow-on treatment if you have previously used The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane.

As Retinol can cause significant irritation in the early stages of treatment while skin builds tolerance, if you have not used high-strength retinol formulas in the past, we strongly recommend that you start with The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane and adjust to higher strengths as your skin builds tolerance. Alternatively you could use The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane or The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane, newer technologies exist that mimic the visible effects of Retinol without causing skin irritation. You will achieve the same end results without the unpleasant redness and peeling along the way.

how to use

Apply a small amount to face in the PM as part of your skincare regimen, after water serums but before heavier treatments. Do not use with other Retinoid treatments. Avoid unprotected solar exposure. Store in a cool, dry place.

When to use:
Before Oils/Creams. PM Only.

Do not use with other retinoid treatments. Do not use if pregnant/breastfeeding. Use of direct acids (Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid etc) may increase skin's sensitivity if used together with Retinols/Retinoids so please monitor how your skin responds and reduce or discontinue use if necessary.

Products containing Retinol are not recommended for use during pregnancy or when breast-feeding. Always use a daily SPF when using products containing Retinol.

Key Ingredients

Retinol: A derivative of vitamin A, retinol is renowned for its anti-aging benefits. It promotes collagen production, accelerates cellular turnover, and reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

Squalane: A naturally occurring component in the skin, squalane is a stable, saturated hydrocarbon that hydrates and shields the skin. It is known for its moisturizing properties and its ability to prevent the ongoing loss of hydration.

Squalane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Retinol, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, BHT.

Q: What is The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane?
A: It is a lightweight solution that combines 0.5% pure retinol with squalane, a plant-derived hydrator. The product aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines, photo damage, and general skin aging.

Q: How should I use this product?
A: After cleansing and toning in the PM, apply a small amount to your face, avoiding the eye area. Start with applications every other night and, if tolerated, increase frequency. Ensure you use sunscreen in the AM, as retinol can increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

Q: Who is this product for?
A: It's designed for those who have some experience with retinol and are looking for a mid-strength solution to target signs of aging and improve skin texture.

Q: How does the squalane in the formula benefit the skin?
A: Squalane helps to hydrate and protect the skin. It ensures the retinol is delivered with a moisturizing base to reduce potential dryness that retinol can sometimes cause.

Q: What precautions should I take when starting with retinol?
A: It's advisable to introduce retinol gradually into your routine, starting with 2-3 times a week and increasing as tolerated. Always perform a patch test to check for reactions and use a high-SPF sunscreen daily.

Q: Can I use this product alongside other treatments?
A: When incorporating retinol into a regimen, be cautious about combining it with other potent active ingredients like acids or vitamin C, as this can cause irritation. If unsure, consult with a skincare expert.

Q: Will I experience skin "purging" when using retinol?
A: Some users may experience a temporary increase in acne and skin turnover when they first start using retinol. This "purging" phase typically subsides as the skin adjusts to the product.

Q: Is this concentration suitable for retinol beginners?
A: If you're new to retinol, it's often recommended to start with a lower concentration, like 0.2%, to see how your skin reacts. The 0.5% concentration can be more suitable for those who have previously used retinol without irritation.

Q: Why should I use retinol only in the PM?
A: Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV radiation. Using it in the evening and following up with sunscreen in the morning minimizes potential sun damage.
