The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is an ideal starter Retinol treatment, helping to minimise visible signs of aging without irritation.

Why you need it

The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is ideal if you've never used Retinol before. This formulation includes 0.2% pure Retinol, strong enough to target the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, visible pores, photo damage and hyper pigmentation without the irritation that can be associated with highels of Retinol.

Retinol (also known as Vitamin A) can reduce the appearances of fine lines, photo damage and of general skin ageing. Retinol works by communicating with skin cells, increasing skin cell turnover and collagen production. It also has powerful anti-oxidant properties helping to counteract environmental damage.

Products containing Retinol are not recommended for use during pregnancy or when breast-feeding.
Always use a daily SPF when using products containing Retinol.

SPF recommended:
Use of daytime SPF is strongly recommended when using Retinol/Retinoid products.

how to use

Apply a small amount to face in the PM as part of your skincare regimen, after water serums but before heavier treatments. Do not use with other retinoid treatments. Avoid unprotected solar exposure. Store in a cool, dry place.

Key Ingredients

Retinol: Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A, widely regarded in the world of skincare for its anti-aging properties. This potent ingredient works by accelerating cell turnover, aiding the removal of dead skin cells and promoting the growth of newer ones. Regular use of retinol can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. It also helps improve skin texture and tone, making the skin look rejuvenated. However, because of its potency, it can be irritating to some, which is why it's available in various concentrations, and users are advised to gradually introduce it to their routine.

Squalane: Squalane is a naturally occurring component found in the skin's lipid barrier. Its role in this product is to act as an emollient, providing hydration and preventing the loss of moisture. Squalane is highly stable and resistant to oxidation, making it an excellent ingredient for skincare. It's also non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores, and offers a light, non-greasy texture, which makes it suitable for all skin types.

Jojoba Oil: Though not a primary ingredient, it's worth noting that jojoba oil can sometimes be found in retinol formulations. It acts as a moisturizer and can help reduce potential irritation from retinol. Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin's natural sebum, which makes it an effective hydrating agent.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Often found in skincare products, tocopherol is an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from damage by free radicals and harmful UV rays. It also provides moisturizing properties, making it beneficial in preventing dryness, especially when using potentially drying agents like retinol.

Squalane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Retinol, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, BHT.

Q: What is The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane?
A: This product is a lightweight solution that combines 0.2% pure retinol with squalane, a plant-derived hydrator. It's designed to target signs of aging and improve skin texture.

Q: Who should use Retinol 0.2% in Squalane?
A: This product is suitable for those looking to target signs of aging and improve skin texture. If you're new to retinol, starting with a 0.2% concentration is recommended.

Q: Can I experience any side effects?
A: Retinol can cause skin irritation, redness, peeling, or dryness, especially when first introduced. It's advised to start slowly and always conduct a patch test before using it on the entire face.

Q: What's the role of squalane in this formula?
A: Squalane is an emollient that helps to hydrate and protect the skin. It ensures the retinol is delivered in a moisturizing base to offset some of the drying effects retinol can have.

Q: Can I use this product with other skincare ingredients?
A: While you can combine it with most other skincare products, it's generally recommended to avoid using retinol with other potentially irritating ingredients like strong acids. Consult with a dermatologist for a personalized regimen.

Q: How often should I use this product?
A: Initially, you might want to use it 2-3 times a week in the PM and observe how your skin reacts. As your skin builds tolerance, you can increase the frequency.

Q: Why is it important to wear sunscreen when using retinol?
A: Retinol can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, potentially leading to sunburns or hyperpigmentation. Using a broad-spectrum SPF during the day is crucial when using products with retinol.

Q: How does this 0.2% concentration differ from higher concentrations?
A: The 0.2% concentration is considered a lower strength, making it suitable for those new to retinol or those with sensitive skin. The Ordinary also offers higher concentrations for those looking for more potent effects or who have built a tolerance to retinol.

Q: Is The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane vegan and cruelty-free?
A: Yes, The Ordinary is known for its commitment to producing products that are vegan and cruelty-free, and this retinol solution is no exception.
